There is a new book entitled Run Like A Girl which I am recommending to my friends. It is the stories of everyday women (translation you and me) who through sports recognize their potential.
It drives me crazy when I hear Oh She Hits like a Girl or .. Runs Like a Girl or when I hear women often times in Politics tell their male opponent to “Man Up”. Sorry, if you are telling someone to be brave and strong seems to me you want to say ” Woman Up.” Same with runs like a girl. Think about the women in your life. Powerful, strong,
enduring, compassionate, the lists goes one. Aren’t you glad you are on this team!
Let’s Reclaim The Phrase- Run Like A Girl
I Felt I Was Born For Greatness–Wow!
Of course this is the swan song week for Oprah Winfrey’s long running and much loved show on broadcast tv. I heard her say in an interview from many years ago that she felt she was born for greatness. Which of course was true. But to have the
confidence to believe that and say it..how powerful. It goes to the issue of what we have talked about. How girls need to be less modest, more outspoken and embracing of who they are.
Oprah also talks about everyone having a calling. There are those who would say not everyone does. What do you say. What is your calling and if you don’t have one, is that okay too?
My Mom is Mean (to other moms)
On our Sandwich Moms Show (Comcast 248) we have done stories about Mean Girls.
So what about Mean Moms? I guess I didn’t really think there was such a thing, till I saw a story on the Today Show last week. Apparently there are Mean Moms out there, who literally bully other moms, spread gossip, make moms feel inferior. The psychologist on the show said, the cure is to confront the mom. Tell her her behavior is unacceptable. Funny, its the same advice we give our kids when dealing with a bully.
Have you had an experience with a mean mom? If so share.
Recipes for Kids
One of my favorite segments on our Sandwich Moms Show is when I gently deceive my kids and their friends into eating healthy.
The recipes can be found at doitdeceptively.com.
The recipes come from a book written by Jessica Seinfeld (Jerry’s wife).
How do you get your kids to eat?
From Modess to Mooncup- You’ve Come A Long Way Baby
And you thought there was nothing new under the sun. I came across something called the mooncup. Popular in the UK, it replaces tampons and sanitary napkins. It is a plastic cup you insert into your vagina and it captures the blood. Every four hours you remove it,dispose of the blood, wash it and then reinsert. Its environmentally friendly( I shudder to think of all the pads and pons we use in a lifetime). And althought its not cheap (around 30.00) once the price comes down, it could be an answer in third world countries where the lack of funds for menstrual products keeps many women home from school and work.
Would you, have you tried the mooncup?
Just When The News Couldn’t Get Worse
A cancer diagnosis is a heavy burden. Imagine being diagnosed with cancer and then being told you are denied custody of your kids because of your cancer.
This is exactly the predicament facing one mom in the news right now. She and her husband are divorcing. He is in another state. She has stage four cancer. He wants the kids . The court ruled because the mother has cancer , the dad should have custody.
What do you think?
Mother’s Day
Meredith and the Gang on the Today Show Friday were talking about lessons learned from their mom. It got me to thinking- I am an old mom, but I had (have :}) a young mom. She had me and my brothers in her early 20′s. I remember her being very active and engaged with us. So the lesson I learned is that even though I am of an age where the body says slow down, my memories of my active engaged mom motivate me everyday. I want to be that kind of mom for my girls. And you know what they say, age ain’t nothin’ but a number. What lessons did your mom teach you?
Laughin Through the Tears
Before I had children, I collected alot of stuff more tschotskes than anything of real value. And I always said that when kids came along my attitude would be …nothing is too precious to lose. But then of course I had kids and they broke vases, cracked lamps and wrote on sofas with indelible ink.
And for the most part , I have taken it in stride.
And then I checked out this website and realized I am not alone.
“That Girl” has Your Kick Start
Remember when Marlo Thomas was ” That Girl”. Whoa..even I was a child , so yes it has been a long time since her tv show aired. Well, Marlo Thomas has an offer you may not be able to refuse. She wants to help you Kick Start Your Life. And it sounds like a terrific offer. If you are looking to make a change in your life, she may be the answer.Almost 30 years ago, I got a kick start when I decided to change careers from law to journalism. Although I didn’t have a Marlo to help, and I managed to do it, I was alot younger and more naive. Making a change today wouldn’t be as easy for a host of reasons..but it can be done..click here and find out.
I have the link on my blog roll.

You Should Never Go Home Again
With an apology to Thomas Wolf, sometimes going home shouldn’t even be tried.
This is the 12th anniversary of the Columbine Shooting. I grew up in Littleton Colo, home of Columbine. The station sent me to cover the story…12 years ago today. I was a new mom,Cameron was 5 months old, my parents still lived there. So of course I took Cam with me. And while I had such joy over this new life, I couldn’t help but juxtapose it to all the young lives lost that day. I remember interviewing one of the victims Dad’s Isaiah ,thinking about my newborn all the time and having new found understanding for how
precious life is. Say a prayer for all the victims of Columbine. Sadly few lessons have been learned.
